When it’s good, pray. When it hurts, pray. When you don’t have the words, pray.
Some times it’s hard to face your Lord with your pained heart and everything you’re carrying, but who else can you go to with it except the One who created your heart and everything it holds?
Lost in Prayer
by Ruqaiyah Davids
The tears fall
From the depths of the soul
From beneath the rock of a heart
The words rush forth—
And then get stuck
Somewhere between a heart of sincerity
And a mind filled with doubt
He raises his hands to the sky
He pleads
He promises
He speaks to the only One;
The One he knows can hear his heart
She wills herself to feel
She wishes her heart would heal
Silence surrounds her as she sits with her Lord
With no words
She wants to tell Him everything
But she doesn’t know what to say
Her numbed heart keeps her words at bay
Yet still, there is another
She raises her eyes to the sky
She thanks
She praises
She gives her heart to the only One;
The One she knows is worthy of her love
She shares with Him her tears—
Of joy, of struggle, of strength
She falls in love with Him again
Because His Mercy upon her is plain to see
She loves Him and He loves her.
And in the distance, there is a heart so hard
Eyes so dry—
Too many of his tears have already fallen
And been wiped away with the backs of empty hands
Too many times he has called on
The Lord he now struggles to obey
He knows he should not give up
But where does he find the strength to go on?
The tears fall
From the depths of the soul
From beneath the rock of a heart
The words rush forth—
And then get stuck
Somewhere between a heart of sincerity
And a head filled with hurt
The first time she sits
After so long of staying away
She whispers words
Heavy with her heart
And they embrace her
With a loving comfort that she knew was always there
Yet she feared them for so long
The words wrap around her smoothly
Slowly
With meaning
With purpose
With desperation
It’s the most familiar embrace.
It’s the most loving embrace.
